FAQ

To work as an automotive mechanic, do I need a degree? Can I study part-time?

While a degree is not required, it does help. Employers prefer candidates who have completed a full degree. This shows you have put in the work and achieved success.

You can still study while working, however. Some universities permit students to do coursework during summer holidays and complete their studies later in a year. Students can also take classes part time throughout the academic year.

Is it hard to be an apprentice mechanic?

It's not easy, but you learn fast, and there are many opportunities for advancement.

You must be patient and persistent. You should also be able to repair cars, trucks, and motorbikes.

Customers and relatives can exert a lot on you. However, you shouldn't be forced to make difficult decisions.

This could be an excellent career choice for someone who enjoys fixing cars. This is a job that allows you to earn a decent income and grow your business.

Perhaps you prefer a different route. In this case, you could consider becoming a technician instead.

This is where you use your technical skills to support other workers. This could be a way to help technicians with their problems or to teach them new techniques.

Another option is becoming a service advisor. You will offer assistance and advice to customers when they bring cars to a garage.

It all depends on your goals. There are many options to choose from, and it is up to you which one suits you the best.

What is the difference in a mechanic and an auto technician?

Although they may be similar, they are not identical. Both a mechanic and an automotive technician can repair cars.

A mechanic must possess good manual dexterity, and be able perform simple tasks efficiently. They must also be able to diagnose problems accurately and repair them effectively.

An automotive technician is required to have more technical knowledge than a mechanic. They need to be able use tools such drills and wrenches, and read blueprints.

They must also be able to carry out complex procedures safely. They must also be familiarized in different types and electrical systems.

They must also be capable of understanding how parts interact.

This means that mechanics usually make less money than automotive technicians. Both careers have many options.

How can I fix my car as a hobby?

Take up a hobby in car repair if you have an interest. You could repair them yourself, buy parts for them and sell them. Or just have fun with them. If you are looking for something new, this would be a great hobby.

However, it's not easy to turn this into a full-time career. This requires dedication and hard work. Also, you will need to put a lot of money into it.

It is best to avoid getting involved in car accidents unless you have good reasons.

How To

How to be an Automotive Technician

An automotive technician provides repair services and maintenance to vehicles. He/she works at automotive shops, garages or service centers. He/she repairs cars, trucks, motorbikes and snowmobiles for customers. An automotive technician must be capable of diagnosing problems and making repairs safely, accurately and efficiently.

If you want to be an automotive technician, you need an associate degree from vocational school. After completing this program the student must pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence exam (ASE). ASE stands to American Society of Mechanical Engineers. There are two sections to the ASE certification test. One section tests mechanical knowledge; the second section tests practical skills. You must attend one of the authorized testing sites to take the test. These locations are available online or through your local automotive dealer.

Before becoming an automotive technician, a candidate must pass the test. This process can vary depending on where the applicant lives. Some states require applicants to take a training course while others allow them the freedom to study on their own. Some states permit technicians to work immediately after they are granted their license. Others require them to wait at least six consecutive months before they can be licensed.

To get started as an automotive technician, a person should apply to a local automotive dealership. Most new employees work as apprentices after they have been hired. Apprenticeship programs last about three years. During this time, a student learns how to perform basic repairs, such as changing oil, adjusting brakes, replacing tires, cleaning spark plugs, inspecting engine compartments, and performing routine maintenance. Some students learn how to do advanced repairs, such as installing air filters, replacing shocks, repairing engines, and replacing transmission fluids. Classes are offered by most schools during regular business hours. However, some schools offer evening classes if needed.

Once a student completes his/her apprenticeship, he/she becomes a journeyman. Journeymen spend typically four to five years learning to install major systems such as transmissions and differentials, steering gear, suspensions and drive shafts. They learn how to do complex repairs such as remanufacturing engines, rebuilding transmissives, and troubleshooting electronic components. Many employers prefer to hire Journeymen because they understand the job well.

A candidate who passes all the necessary exams and gets a license might be interested in opening his/her own business. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2010, nearly 1.7 Million automotive mechanic jobs were available. This figure is expected to rise 18 percent between 2009-2020. If a candidate decides to open his/her own shop, he/she should prepare to invest many thousands of dollars in equipment and supplies.

There are many factors that affect the salary of an automotive technician, such as where they live, their education and experience. An average salary for a jobless individual is $20,000 per annum. A person with only a high-school diploma could make around $21,000 annually. A bachelor's degree is equivalent to approximately $24,000 annually. Technicians with bachelor's degrees earn approximately $27,000 per year. The average annual salary for those with master's degrees was $32,000. Salary increases are common, so a professional who earns less than $30,000 now could reasonably expect to earn $40,000 or more in just a few years.
